Guided Reading is the
HEART of the Literacy Block
Creating Nonreaders
Leveled Text Resource
Planned, intentional, focused instruction...conducted in small group settings...with assistance of a teacher to help students learn more about the reading process (Opitz & Ford, 2001)
Guided Reading is skillful teaching that helps readers learn strategies to become more independent
Rethinking Guided Reading
Before you can conduct effective small group instruction, your students must be able to work independently for sustained periods of time.
Guided reading is an opportunity to further model and practice strategies that good readers use in a small group setting.
Guided Reading groups should be matched with text by strategy need or level. An instructional text is any text a student can read with 90 - 94% accuracy. The best way to measure accuracy is with an Oral Reading Record.
